The seed for SWISH was started with the annual sex worker spa day that started in 2010, a temporary healing pop up space by and for sex workers only.
After the recent laws FOSTA/SESTA passed in Spring of 2018, further criminalizing safer sex work, more workers were pushed outdoors. With no online place to advertise, we saw a tremendous leap in Oakland and San Francisco, in the amount of people working outside.
According to research, 81% of outdoor sex workers are exposed to work related violence as opposed to 48% of indoor sex workers.
Because of this upsurge and lack of access to resources SWISH began to do safer sex supply street outreach in a small portion of East Oakland, with the hopes of expanding more resources. In the future we hope to have a sex worker safety line/text app, and are beginning the boxes project.
